Synopsis
A four-part Italian RAI television adaptation that brings to life Fyodor Dostoevsky's three "ministerial novels": The Double, Notes from Underground, and A Nasty Story. The series delivers a psychological and social portrait of low-ranking state officials caught in their own deep inner turmoil, social alienation, and moral decay.

Ivan Petrovic, a mediocre government clerk, creates a wealthy and charming alter ego in his fantasy. This mental construct of a double gradually consumes him, causing him to spiral into full-blown schizophrenic delirium and lose his grip on reality.

Ivan Petrovic's malicious double becomes so real that it begins to plot against him. The double tricks Ivan into entering the house of Klara, the woman he loves, where his colleagues ultimately corner him and hand him over to Dr. Rutenspitz to be committed to an asylum.

Based on the second part of Notes from Underground, the story follows a man who clumsily attempts to integrate into society. However, his efforts fail completely as he proves unable to escape from his own self-destructive nature and his inevitable, profound isolation.

Two travelers on a train from Petersburg to Perm debate the contrast between the peaceful peasant world and hectic urban life. During the journey, a Count discovers that a young, progressive ministry clerk has been exiled due to a past "incident." Meanwhile, a General learns of the wedding of one of his lower-ranking employees and decides to crash the party in a pseudo-humanitarian impulse; however, his awkward presence creates deep discomfort and causes the celebration to degenerate into complete disaster.
