Synopsis

How do you interpret the Ten Commandments today? For a long time, these commandments guided our thoughts and actions, but how do people relate to these rules, to each other, and to today's complex society? Ten filmmakers of varying ages, backgrounds, and experience have explored the deeper meaning of these ancient rules. In the documentaries, they are contrasted with today's multicultural, globalized, and secularized world. A series of ten highly diverse documentaries, each addressing one commandment in its own unique way. The films explore contemporary themes such as identity, friendship, addiction, postcolonialism, morality, and the human impact on nature.

Ep. 1: De thuiskomst - Gebod 8 (2025-03-03)

A recycled documentary essay in which filmmaker Jos de Putter gives the eighth commandment an ecological dimension. The premise is that we have plundered nature over the past centuries, making climate change no longer a possibility but a frightening reality. A philosophical and theological layer in the film poses the question of whether a reinterpretation of God's presence in nature would help humanity relate to nature differently, leading us to treat the earth more carefully.

A story about a group of people from the Bosnian city of Mostar, who have fallen into deep despair after a terrible war and a destructive gambling addiction. Despite all their differences, they learn to listen to each other again and show genuine care. This has a healing effect, enabling them to break free from their gambling addiction and start a new life.

For many migrant children, resting isn't an option. If your parents have done everything they can to give you the chance to succeed, you feel a heavy responsibility to always work hard. Bibi Fadlalla explores the deeper meaning of rest based on the fourth commandment, "Remember the Sabbath and keep it holy."
