Biography

Yasmin J. Lee is an Afro-surrealist writer, director, and interdisciplinary artist who creates emotionally rooted films that blend modern folklore with romanticized visuals to address identity, intimacy, and power. As a Wofford alumna and emerging filmmaker, Lee has established herself in both the Upstate and the Midlands as a writer-director and art department crew member. In 2025, Yasmin finished the South Carolina Film Commission’s WIDE Angle program, where they pitched their feature script “Surrounded” to executives, including Deniese Davis and Michael Quigley. They won the South Carolina Arts Commission’s 2025 Emerging Artist Grant to support their completed short, “Spirits Talk.” In 2026, Yasmin won the Local Cinema Studios and South Carolina Film Commission’s first-ever “Pitch It!” Event and became the Artist Development & Program Director of the inaugural Film Gallery Carolina Event. Currently, Yasmin is driven to give back to the community where her film career began. Lee will present their filmmaker talk, “Conjuring Folklore in Cinema,” at various colleges and creative spaces in South Carolina to bring awareness to mental health and the impact of grief.
