Synopsis

In Calau, a small town on the edge of the lignite mining region, an unusual vacation expedition begins for twenty children: They bike across the southern part of the country, sleep in tents that they carry on their bikes, and learn a great deal about life in the GDR along the way. Much of the experience revolves around their mode of transportation—the bicycle: a visit to the Transportation Museum, a meeting with cyclists, and a tour of the Sangerhausen bicycle factory. In between, they have to conquer hills and mountains, pitch and take down their tents every day, procure food, and do laundry...
